COPRAS - L.I.A.I.S.O.N.

Front-line services for the Italian community at large begin.

As community development promoter, COPRAS established meaningful contacts and relationships at a social and at a political level.

The Opportunities for Youth program of the Federal government was an incentive to set up the services already proposed with CIDA.  Loretta Antioco organized a group of students in social work, most Italian speaking, to form the LIAISON team.  The project was sponsored by COPRAS and backed by several community organizations.

Summary of the LIAISON project objectives

LIAISON operated providing information and referral services to the community.  The local media was supportive in communicating its existence and mission:  there was evidence of a successful start up to the initiative.

Working on the sidelines, COPRAS was preparing the grounds for the continuity of the services, once the project funding would terminate.  Meetings with representatives from the Ministère des affaires sociales and local organizations were productive.

However, the success of the project in providing direct services, the ambitions of community spokes-people and plain internal politics provided LIAISON with new options for its staff.  COPRAS supported them objectively.
